COMPRESSION OF VOLUME DATA WITH THE USE OF PERTURBATION FUNCTIONS
(pp. 22-27)

Abstract. The representation of geometric objects based on volumetric data has advantages in many geometry processing applications. However, surface based algorithms like shape fairing or freeform modeling need a topological manifold representation. Therefore, it is necessary to find effective conversion algorithms to generate surface descriptions for the geometry, which defined by a volumetric data set. There are two major classes of surface representations in computer graphics: parametric surfaces and implicit surfaces. Parametric surfaces are defined as the range of a function and implicit surfaces are defined as the kernel of a function. The concept behind volume representations for geometric models is that they characterize the whole space enclosing an object. By this, they are independent from the actual surface topology and this is why volume representations are preferred in applications where the topology of an object can be complicated or even changes during an operation. Conversion from parametric to implicit requires computing the surface’s distance field while conversion from implicit to parametric is usually done by finding surface samples and connecting them to a polygonal mesh. In this paper, a new technique for the conversion from the volume representation of an object to the function-based representation of its surface is proposed. The surface compression method is an octal-tree subdivision algorithm with an enhanced quality of the output function-based surfaces.

Keywords: Volumetric data; Perturbation functions; Octal-tree subdivision of the object space.
