FRACTAL INTERPOLATION OF RANDOM CURVES
(pp. 18–23)

Abstract. Fractal interpolation is widely used in computer graphics for the synthesis of textures that mimic the optical properties of the natural object surfaces. However, self-similarity here is only a technique to reduce the amount of computation during rendering. At the same time, the publications which deal with fractal interpolation of natural object's boundaries are concentrated on the presentation of small details, whose usefulness is questionable. In both cases, the global characteristics of the object shape which commonly are used for object recognition and classification, remain outside of the fractal analysis. The paper presents an algorithm of fractal curve interpolation, allowing to obtain complex shapes from simple polygon models. A distinctive feature of the algorithm is that each segment of a polygon model is corrected by embedding a new segment similar to it. The relation of local similarity is determined by comparing of model segment and its immediate neighborhood. On the complex plane this ratio is described by a pair of complex numbers and is used as local invariant on all scales. For space curve interpolation an additional invariant is used. This invariant describes relative displacement along the axis normal to both segments – the original and the embedded one. In this case complex invariants are calculated in a plane parallel to both segments. The possibility of shape control using a few global parameters is discussed. Numerous examples show how a simple polygon is transformed into complex shape similar to objects of flora and fauna. The algorithm is simple to implement and can be used to encode / decode complex contour objects and visualization of key features of polygon model.
